Photo of the Day

I don't have anything new to post for a review at the moment. Currently working on several reviews all at the same time. Up next will be some shades of the Le Blush Crème de Chanel. I've been putting them to a rigorous test this week. Thoughts, photos and swatches will be up soon. For now, just wanted to share a random nail wheel shot. The colors are washed out from the bright sunlight and flash, but for inquiring minds, the left side is from the Chanel Élixir review. The right side is from the YSL Rose Baby Doll review. Check those features to see which color is which.

Mother's Day Shopping List

Affiliate Links

Mother's Day is a week away and if you're like me, you have a mother who always insists that having a simple brunch with her is more than enough to make her happy. My siblings and I still always want to find something special for her to show our appreciation for all that she does. I've compiled a preliminary shopping list for ideas - I'll be narrowing down the picks in the next few days. Most sites have a Mother's Day section with great suggestions, some have special sales and promotions going on. I will most likely pick 2-3 items from my list to combine with a bouquet of fresh cut flowers.
Do you have any ideas for Mother's Day gifts? Do you have any traditions you do yearly for this special day? Ideas welcome!

Late-Week Lust List

My late-week (mid-week, didn't realize the week is already almost over) lust list includes a mix of tried and true staples along with some new items that are extremely tempting. My resolve is weakening, especially because of Nordstrom's Triple Points event going on now until the 24th (I have some Dior and NARS items waiting in store from pre-sales that I need to pick up soon).
  • Diptyque Candles ($28 to $60 for the clear jars) are among my favorite candles. I've burned through Baies and Figuier several times over and the jars are easily recyclable into beautiful brush or pen holders. These days I'm always have a candle burning while I'm at home whether it's Diptyque, Henri Bendel, Jo Malone or something else new. I've never tried the Wick Trimer yet, but figured it's about time I purchase one. Do any of you have experiences with candle trimmers?
  • Chanel Top Coat ($26) is a staple glossy must-have that extends the life of my manicures that doesn't cause shrinkage. Mine lasted several years but just started to thicken (I think I didn't close the lid tightly enough with the last few uses). I need to replenish.
  • Dior has re-vamped their Addict Glosses ($29.50) once again. I need Nuit Boreale because it looked so gorgeous on Makeup and Beauty Blog (although it's probably an existing shade re-incarnated with a different name).
  • NARS Satin Lip Pencils ($25 each) have been all the rage. I love how they look on Café Makeup and Temptalia. I already own Isola Bella, a gorgeous nude-pink and love it. I need a few more of the neutrals. These look like an easy goof-proof throw-it-on kind of pencil.

Did you buy anything for Triple Points? I've love to live vicariously through your picks :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! This week we have a zoo at our house. We have a little chihuahua visiting named Coco. Right now there are four fluffy friends in our home: two jack russells, a ragamuffin kitten, and a chihuahua. It's been non-stop cuteness. They've all become quick friends, but the cat and the chihuahua have become particularly smitten with each other and are now BFFs. I have so much to be thankful for. I hope everyone who celebrates is able to enjoy time spent with loved ones.

Currently loving ...
  • Empty/used Diptyque candles as brush and pen holders (inspired by home decor ideas on Cupcakes and Cashmere and as seen on Jen Brill's Top Shelf via Into The Gloss)
  • Small but beautiful gifts, such as the Chanel Camelia bookmark sent as a gift by the Nordstrom Seattle Chanel counter (thank you!)
  • Dior Bikini Nail Lacquer as the perfect spring-to-summer coral (swatched a few days ago)
  • OPI NYC Ballet Collection, such beautiful sheers that give a perfect polished look, I'm still hunting for 3 of the shades since my local Ulta was sold out (see swatches of all shades on Scrangie)
Currently lusting for ...
  • Guerlain's Pucci Summer Bronzer (sneak peek on The Non-Blonde and Temptalia)
  • Frédéric Malle's Carnal Flower perfume (debating the small vials set or a full bottle)
  • Chanel's upcoming summer release (one of each please!)
Currently loving these ...
And an update ... some of you may have noticed my posting frequency has slowed over the past few months (since December actually). There are weeks when I feel like I have time to be a weekend-only blogger. I've been extremely busy with non-blog related projects this year. Each week has added more projects, conferences, and training requirements. I'll be taking a short blog break to focus on work and life. Comments will be turned off shortly and I'll have limited time to answer e-mails but will do my best. I hope to be back in a few weeks!

Recently Asked Questions

Answers to a few recently asked questions.

Chanel Rose Caché looks similar to OPI Tickle My France-y, do you know how close they are? They are very close on the nails. Chanel Rose Caché has more warmth and more pink while OPI Tickle My France-y has more grey tones. I don't have a preference for either color, I think they are both lovely.

I can't see full posts or photos in my Google Reader or subscription emails. Did you change your feed? Yes, I did. Like many other bloggers I have had my content stolen through my RSS feed to download into a number of spam blogs. Stolen content can be removed via Google forms and by sending out DMCA notices, but it is extremely time consuming and not always effective. Thanks to London Makeup Girl who wrote a helpful article to help prevent content being stolen through spam blogs. I have changed my feed to "short" to only include the first paragraph. I realize this may be an inconvenience for some of my readers, but it is heartbreaking to have my hard work stolen - especially when most of the photographs on this blog are my own (ie they are not stock/promo photos). At this time I do not generate any revenue from ads, affiliate links etc. and it bothers me when others try to benefit from my work to generate traffic/hits/revenue for themselves by stealing. I apologize for any inconvenience to readers who prefer the full feed but I will not be changing it back in the near future. Shortening my feed is one thing I can do to try and protect my content. I could change my format to restricted access but I feel that would be more of an inconvenience. Thank you for understanding.

If you were to only pick one, which would it be? Chanel Noir-Ivoire or Dior Couture Golds? If I didn't have Endless Shine from last year then I would have just picked the Chanel. Both options are very different though - Chanel duos offer a simple polished refined look while Dior quints give more variety but are usually more shimmery and festive.

What's the best new highlighter this holiday season? This year is the season of the uber-subtle glow. I would say tied between Edward Bess South of France and Giorgio Armani Madre Perla 1 for the new items this holiday season. Personally I prefer the more visible highlighters of past seasons a bit more but this season offers some lovely options.

There are so many new foundation options out there now. In your mind what is the best one? The right foundation for you will depend on your skintype. Mine is normal, sensitive, small pores. Right now, my top 2 favorites are Dolce & Gabbana's Perfect Creamy Foundation and Powder Foundation (sorry Chanel, my long time favorites were discontinued, so I found a replacement). I cannot pick between the two. Both are fine on their own. The cream works just fine without any powder and the powder foundation works well by itself, but I prefer to layer them both. The finish is smooth with natural but full coverage.

What's the best skincare out there? The right skincare will depend on a variety of things like skin-type, sensitivity issues, age among a number of other things. I've always felt less is more when it comes to skincare but as I age, my perceptions have changed. These days I use a mixture of Cle de Peau (gentle cleanser and eye cream), Koh Gen Do (masks, cleansing water, massage milk, gommage) Le Metier (peau vierge day cream and cleanser) and La Mer (toner). I would never tell anyone that this is the mixture of things to use - skincare is so personal, no two people are alike. What works for me most likely won't work the same for you. Some people like gel cleansers, others like ones that foam up. My only advice is that finding the right skincare will take time: lots of research, trial and error, if samples are available then the testing will be easier.

What did you think of the Chanel Rouge Allure Velvets Collection? Will you be reviewing anything? I passed on all the Rouge Allure Velvet lipsticks. I'm not a fan of matte or semi-matte lips. I think it can be hard for me to pull off since I have full lips.

How do the top two shades in Le Métier de Beauté Le Cirque compare to the taupey shades in Splendid Frost/Come One, Come All? I find the shades from Le Cirque to be very different from Splendid Frost/Come One, Come All. Here they are below.

Loving This Week

I did not make it to NYC this year for the LuckyFABB, FNO or NYFW (maybe next year). Instead I was in San Francisco and Napa busy being touristy. The highlights of last week were all food-related but the shopping options there were also phenomenal. My favorites were the Bouchon Bistro and Bakery in Yountville. If you have one of the bakeries near you (in Beverly Hills, Las Vegas, NY) you must try their macarons. So delicious!!!

On fashion and beauty related notes, this is what I'm loving this week:

Inside My Traveling Bag - The Beauty Edition

I'm one who carries way too much in my purse and packs way too much when I travel. Every now and then I receive emails asking for travel and packing tips. My response usually consists of an apology (for lack of advice) and ends with a referral to Café Makeup's traveling in Paris post (which is brilliant). The Non-Blonde also recently wrote a lovely feature to show us what she put inside her makeup case (I thought  her selections were beautifully edited & well chosen). I've been traveling this past week and thought I'd share what I brought with me to San Francisco all tucked into my Paul & Joe travel makeup case (yes, I over-packed).

  • Le Métier de Beauté Sample Packets of the new Revitalizing Anti-Aging Day Creme (one packet took me through an entire week and I brought 2 with me)
  • La Mer Travel Size Cleansing Gel (not photographed)
  • Lancome Travel Size Cleansing Water
  • Cotton Pads & Q-tips
  • Mini packets of Chanel Vitalumiere Aquas (not shown because they were tossed after use)
  • Chanel Powder Foundation in Tender Bisque
  • Cle de Peau Concealer in Beige
  • Edward Bess Daydream Bronzer
  • Edward Bess Afterglow Highlighter
  • Chanel Espiegle Blush
  • Chanel Beiges Highlighter
  • Hourglass Primer
  • Mini brushes (an assortment, yes way too many but I just grabbed a bunch and tossed them into my bag)
  • Two eyelash curlers from Chanel and Le Metier (because I did not realize I grabbed both)
  • Laura Mercier Platinum Metallic Eye Creme
  • Dior Summer 2011 Quints in Nude Tan and Rosy Tan
  • Mini Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara (not photographed)
  • An assortment of eyeliners from Le Métier de Beauté, D&G and Chanel
  • Le Métier de Beauté Cannes Lipgloss
  • Chanel Aragonite Glossimer (Spring 2011)
  • Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Fetiche and Biarritz
  • Mini L'Artisan travel vial with Jo Malone Earl Grey Cologne

Overall thoughts: Usually I overpack because I think of all the what-if type of scenarios. This time I overpacked because I didn't plan ahead.  Postponing the dreaded task of packing to the last minute caused me to pack way too many brushes and two eyelash curlers (many of which I did not need). I was rushed and at the last minute and grabbed a bunch of random things and threw them into my bag. If I were to go back in time and re-pack I would have limited the number of tools/brushes, highlighters and eyeliners I brought. The upside is that everything fit conveniently into the Paul & Joe makeup case (this was a gift with purchase long ago) which helped to limit the product I brought. Also there was not a single additional thing I wished I had brought - it appears I did not leave anything out. San Francisco is almost like a home away from home being packed with virtually every store, brand and item known to every major city. I could have not packed anything and been fine with all the options to choose from around Union Square.

How do you pack when you travel?

  • Glamour Russia has a gorgeous video via YouTube of the new smoky blue quad from Chanel's Sophisticated Eye Collection, the video isn't in English but the application is just beautiful! (I believe the one in the video is the Euro Version, see the US Version on Cafe Makeup)

Hope you're having a great week!

Are You On Twitter?

Good morning readers!  After a few recent e-mails from readers discussing something that was soon to be released, I realized not all of my readers are social media users. I had assumed one of my readers had seen news of upcoming releases because the info had been tweeted by others. After a few discussions, I then realized not everyone is on Twitter. Oops! So I want to ask my readers, are you on Twitter? I am and my twitter account is @BeautyLookBook which you can see below (my most recent Tweet is actually a re-tweet of Paul & Joe Beaute's picture of their new Autumn Collection at Bergdorfs).

For the longest time, I had an inactive Twitter account because I did not know how to use it. I had to ask Josie and Karla for Tweet help because I didn't know what all these acronyms stood for. I had resisted for a long time for a slew of reasons: I don't have time, I can't figure out what Tweets are, how will I manage all this noise?

It's all still a learning process. As many have noted, the biggest challenge is how to scan for the relevant information. I'm more of a passive follower than active Tweeter. I check my blog reads and Twitter feed via my iPhone every few hours while at work during the week and given my schedule I just can't always manage it during the day during a busy work week. Here are some of the reasons why you should join Twitter!
  • You discover new things: I've discovered new blogs and vlogs. People I follow will often re-tweet content they find interesting to spread the word. I find these extremely helpful (most of the time). I've also discovered new blogs from people following me and tweeting interesting news.
  • You can keep track of what's up and coming: I've learned new things from various store or brand Tweets such as upcoming releases, events and apperances.
  • Meet new people: There are brand managers, editors, artists, designers, company founders on Twitter. It's interesting to read what they are loving right now!
  • Track the brands you love: If you are a Sprinkles Cupcakes fan like me, you can find out where their SprinklesMobile is headed next by following them on Twitter @sprinklesmobile!
  • Get advice fast: Several months ago, my dog ate my NARS Angelika Multiple and I freaked (after all, a NARS multiple is like the equivalent of maybe 4 full sized lipsticks?). I called the vet who assured me it was ok as long as she didn't eat any of the plastic. Still in major panic mode while on the phone, I tweeted this to see if anyone else had a dog who ate their makeup. Sure enough people tweeted me back to reassure me I had no need to worry.
A few favorite recent tweets (and people you should follow!):

@NathanBranch of Nathan Branch gives us the latest news on the luxury markets & is my go-to source on fragrance news alerts
5 Aug - Luxury & Fashion Biz News: - Luxury is back in the black, Annick Goutal changes hands, and the emergence of the DIY.

30 July - Well it's official. Hubby now knows I have a blog.

@the_non_blonde of The Non-Blonde has tweets just as wonderful as her blog posts (yes for me on this!)
4 Aug - All the naps I resisted and fought as a little girl? I'll take them now, please and thank you.

@KarlaSugar Karla Sugar tweets new beauty news and shows pics (love her extra tidbits of news)
2 Aug - AND is coming out w/ a slew of nail polishes at as holiday stockingstuffers. Hope Chrome Passion is one of them!

@naturalNchicmak snapped a photo of Armani Fall 2011 at the counters (instant gratification for me while I wait for it to arrive in Southern California)
6 Aug - Armani fall collection:

@BTiBeauty lets us know as soon as the newest items arrive instore!
3 Aug - Actually, all of the Aquarelles de Chanel Collection collection arrived Tysons Galleria today. Located all of it in shipment.

Also courtesy of Nathan Branch, here's an interesting article on Twitter and Brands (see it here).

If you want to share why or why not or other thoughts, please do so in the comments, thanks!

My Must-Have Nail Polishes Plus a Little Update ...

A few of you have e-mailed me asking "what are your top picks for nails?" This is a tough question! As with many other products, my favorites are subject to change week after week. I've picked 5 color categories of what my must-haves for nails are. My favorites fall mainly within a few select brands, but many of my readers either don't like the brand, formula or price. However, those who do love the same brands as me, for each category I've included my right-now favorites by brand/color. Most of these have been previously featured. (Update: It appears the sidebar google search isn't working so I've linked past reviews to each name as applicable below.)

I think everyone needs:

A few nail spam pictures

Black Pearl

Rococo Reissue

And ...

The Beauty Look Book is going on a mini-summer break from blogging the month of June. I have quite a few projects coming up which will require more time and dedication. But not to worry! Blog posting for me will not come to a complete halt this next month although there will be a significant slow down in the upcoming weeks. I will have limited time to respond to e-mails or comments but will keep you updated on my latest finds in the upcoming month and complete a few more reviews on things I've been loving but haven't had time to write about yet.

The inside my new Chanel feature will be posted sometime later this week.

Two birthdays in May: The Beauty Look Book turns two! Time has flown by so fast I cannot believe it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to each of you who have been a daily inspiration to me. I cannot express my gratitude to those who have shared their passion, thoughts and love for beauty with me through this small blog. I thank each and every one of you who visit and comment each week. Thank you for your support!

Also, this past month, another birthday occurred and I am no longer a twenty-something. I have been beyond spoiled with so much. The best was a surprise birthday dinner from my family: specially catered with delicious food, wine and cakes and a fun How-Well-Do-You-Know-Sabrina-Trivia-Game. We had an evening full of laughs.

Trivia Game - designed by my sister:

This one was the one my husband filled out. He got question 5 wrong!!! He was so confident he was right because he hears and sees the words "miu miu" on a weekly basis. Can you guess the right answer?*

I had a few other birthday outings with close friends (and a couple more to come soon) and I was spoiled with beautiful flowers, thoughtful gifts, delicious dinners - all of which made turning 30 so much more fun (and less painful) than I had expected.

* Answer is Kate Spade, thanks to my sister for my high school graduation (a loooong time ago!)

Loving Right Now: For The Home

Silver birdcage ornaments from Pottery Barn (now on sale!), cute for putting a little treat inside instead of a stocking stuffer (still haven't found the perfect photo for these, so I cut out a Nordstrom card and put it inside for now)

More mini ornaments, copper kitchen miniatures from Williams-Sonoma

Candles: Henri Bendel are my favorite! Jo Malone is a nice splurge every once in a while too.

Peppermint Bark Cookies (also on sale at Williams-Sonoma now), so addicting and scrumptious: the perfect midnight snack and I'm not even a peppermint fan

Woven short tray, nice for organizing and display, from Crate & Barrel, Sedona Vanity Tray

Fun stuff from West Elm, large list-type pads, fun games, cheese cards, wine cards, miscellaneous things that are nice to have around the house

Sunday, December 12, 2010 - Shopping For a Good Cause

This year our beloved Karla Sugar had a brilliant idea to put together something called - a collaboration of almost 50 different beauty bloggers and brands. In the spirit of the holidays, we wanted to make a meaningful contribution to charity — knowing that the most effective donation to any charity is cash. So we’ve donated some of our makeup on the auction block. Winning bids will be donated directly to Doctors Without Borders.

We’re raising money for Doctors Without Borders because women are always disproportionately affected in any disaster. This organization is committed to bringing quality medical care to people in crisis, regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation. They treat rape victims in Papua New Guinea; they make sure women don’t die in childbirth in Pakistan; they helped flood victims in Mexico and earthquake victims in Haiti. They work in 65 countries around the world, and your donation will make an immediate impact. Click here to learn more about MSF.

As a reminder, the auction is live now, and will close on Monday, December 20 at 5 pm CST. Don't miss out! There are some great hard-to-find items many have generously donated.
