Minimalist on Monday

I think every week should have a three-day weekend. Two days simply isn't enough time to do the things I want to do (the fun stuff). Today's look is quick and easy with a simple black cotton dress, tan belt, black flats, ivory leather bag. Outfit is almost entirely J.Crew (I can always rely on them for a classic simple look). Leather bag is by Balenciaga. Makeup is all barely-there natural colors. I'm a minimalist at heart even if my natural "no makeup" look isn't really minimalist if you break it down to what I'm wearing.

Inside the bag:

What I'm wearing today: Chanel Tweed Rose Blush, Chanel Taupe-Délicat Eyeshadow Duo, Chanel Espresso Stylo Yeux, Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara, Chanel Confidentielle Rouge Allure, Chanel Star Glossimer, Jo Malone Orange Blossom Cologne, Chanel Peche Nacree Le Vernis

I hope each and every one of you have a great week! Remember Chanel Rouge Coco Shines come out this week in the US!

Weekend Look of the Day: J.Crew White Ruffled Tank & Skirt

How was everyone's weekend? The weather here in Southern California has been a bit odd the past few days - at least by the beach. Sunny bits here and there and then mostly cloudy. This was Sunday's outfit/look.

Top: J.Crew ruffle tank
Skirt: J.Crew white denim mini
Belt: J.Crew patent burgandy skinny belt
Shoes: Prada flats
Purse: Chanel

I didn't plan to have mostly J.Crew on - but it seems to happen more often these days, although I do have to say it's with their older pieces from past seasons. I love how comfortable the ruffle top is, but unfortunately, if it's not tucked in or tied with a belt over, then it looks like a huge tent.

NARS Beverly Hills + South Beach Multiples mixed on cheeks
MAC Getaway Bronze Blush on top

Clinique Seashell Cream Shadow as a base
NARS India Song Duo
MAC Orpheus Eyeliner

NARS Beverly Hills + South Beach mixed/dabbed on lips
MAC Love Nectar Lustreglass + Beach Lounger Lipglass mixed

I'm really loving those Multiple Tints from NARS (see my review of 2 of them here NARS Beverly Hills & Cadaques Multiple Tints = Pure Genius). Beverly Hills pulls more bright pink than red on my skin for some reason, but I still like it. Works well dabbed on lips for a slight tint. I liked it mixed a little with South Beach. I mixed the two on the back of my hand first and then applied on the lips. For cheeks, I swiped Beverly Hills on each cheek then South Beach on top and blended quickly with the fingers.

Also wanted your opinions: for the Chanel - is this something I can still pull off or is it totally OUT of style? It's an older one, I don't think Chanel makes the line anymore - at least definitely not the brown-on-brown. It's just been sitting in my closet for ages. I keep forgetting to bring it out. Input would be greatly appreciated :)

A Few MAC Too Fabulous Lip + Cheek Combinations

I've been playing around with my new MAC Too Fabulous Mineralize Blushes and Cremesheen Glass lipglosses all week and tried a few combinations for each product. Eye makeup was very low-key this week, only using a neutral cream eyeshadow + gel liner + mascara.

The new mineralize blushes are really pretty! Those with darker skins will really like the colors. I agree with the consensus among other reviews that these tend to be on the more shimmery side. They aren't overly frosty when applied with a lighter hand. Those who get oily/shiny fast or have larger pores, I'd say these will probably be a nay for you.

The cremesheen glasses are among my favorite gloss formula from MAC. I like that they repromoted some colors and mixed in some new shades. This gives me ideas on how to use the colors I already have with some new blush colors.

Look #1: MAC Rhapsody in Two Mineralize Blush + Paul & Joe Creamy Cheek #02 + Partial to Pink/Boy Bait Cremesheen Glasses mixed

Look #2: MAC Bi-Tone Mineralize Blush + MAC Love, Henri Lipstick + Moth to Flame Dazzleglass

Look #3: MAC Buddy Up Mineralize Blush + Trish McEvoy Baby Pink Essential Pencil + Just Superb Cremesheen Glass

Look #4: MAC Sun & Moon Mineralize Blush + NARS Cafe Con Leche + MAC Ever Hip Lipstick + Richer, Lusher Cremesheen Glass

Look #5: MAC Deelight Cremesheen Glass + Laura Mercier Chestnut Lipliner + NARS Tutti Fruitti Lipstick + MAC Afterdusk Blush/Stark Naked Blush mixed together

Chantecaille Les Dauphins Palette + Bourbon Rose Lip Chic

Chantecaille's Les Dauphins Palette & Bourbon Rose Lip Chic are more beautiful than words can describe. I've been thinking of how I can give a review that does justice to the Les Dauphins Palette - and all I can say is I think it's a must-have for those who love soft spring-like neutrals and especially those who love taupey shadows. Bourbon Rose is the softer color out of the 2 spring lip chics. It's a natural rosey pink - similar to Tea Rose, but slightly lighter and has golden shimmer.

Another view with flash:

Without flash:

I haven't had time to do swatches of this palette, but Karlasugar has already done an amazing feature on all the items - so I highly recommend you check out her post if you haven't already.

I played around with the palette at Neimans and the color on the dolphins is an overspray. The shadows and blush all have a lovely subtle shimmer. I'm typically not a huge fan of split-pan shadows or blushes, but all the colors in this palette are so pretty, I don't mind.

This is the planned look of the day with the Chantecaille Dauphins Palette & Bourbon Rose Lip Chic.

Today's Look: Tarnished Steel Silk Ribbon Tank + Grey Eyes + Pink Lips/Cheeks

So today I decided I would branch out a bit and show you more of my whole look - basically what makeup items I picked to coordinate with my outfit of the day. I didn't have much on today's agenda except for a lunch date with friends and a few errands to run (yes, I know it's a rough life being on school break).

I know some of you prefer I stick to writing about makeup and after this post, I think I will. I suppose one benefit of this is that you can see a bit more of my style which you might say doesn't exist. I tend to be very basic and simple with my clothing, not the most creative or fun, but it's what I feel comfortable with so it works for me. My makeup tends to reflect my clothing style as well: simple and natural looking. For reference, I am petite at 5'3". So much for trying to be a little creative, but here goes.

The outfit of the day:
  • Silk Ribbon Pleated Shell in Tarnished Steel from Banana Republic
  • Thin Cashmere White Cardigan from Jcrew (this is from over a year ago, so no link)
  • Paige Hollywood Hills Jeans
  • Quilted black purse/tote
  • Black strappy sandals from Banana Republic (from about 3 years ago, so no link)

The face of the day items used include:

MAC Golden Bronzer
Paul & Joe Face Color 001

MAC Bare Study
Bobbi Brown Galaxy Cream Eyeshadow
Dolce & Gabbana Champagne Quad
Dolce & Gabban Stromboli Eyeliner
Diorshow mascara

Bobbi Brown Ballet Pink Lipliner
Chantecaille Camelia Lipchic
Paul & Joe Lip Lacquer 06

The products against the steel grey tank
(not recommended since I almost dropped my lipstick on my dry-clean only tank)

Swatched on bare skin

One more view

I used all four shades in the Dolce & Gabbana Champagne quad and really liked the result. I applied MAC Bare Study Paint Pot first all over the lid, then dusted the light lilac-gold shade from lash line to the middle of the eyelid. I then put the dusty brown mixed with the black smudged along upper lash line blended upwards. Dolce & Gabbana Stromboli was lined and smudged over upper lash line as well with the black shadow reapplied on top for extra definition.

MAC Golden Bronzer was applied on the cheeks like blush with the Paul & Joe 001 Face Color dusted lightly as a highlighter and to give a bit of pink to the cheeks.

The lips were a neutral healthy pink. Overall, I was happy with the result. FYI the Dolce & Gabbana quads have the best pigment that I've tried, they just don't swatch well on a bare arm without any moisturizer or makeup base. I hope the swatches won't deter you from checking out their quads!

New Laura Mercier Crystal Pink Lip Shine & Barely Nude Satin Lipstick

The spring collection from Laura Mercier this year is very simple and polished looking with neutrals in the pinky-brown color family. Most of the collection was actually a bit too neutral for me but I really liked the new Lip Shine in Crystal Pink which is a potted rich-pigment gloss (bronzey peachy pink) and Barely Nude Satin Lipstick (creamy beige).

L to R: Crystal Pink Lip Shine & Barely Nude Satin Lipstick

Swatches in the same order (with flash)

Swatches by the window, natural light

The other lipsticks are in the brown and pink-brown family similar to MAC Spirit and Twig but more wearable. If you liked the Renaissance Eye Color Duo from Nordstrom's Anniversary sale last July, you will probably like the new eyeshadow duos as well since they are all very natural and light.

Also in the collection is a cream highlighter with 3 different colors (pale pink, rose, bronze) placed into layers in the compact. It seemed a bit too messy for me, but was really pretty - it's something I might go back and look at again.

Looks I'm Loving Right Now: Day 4

Today's focus is around silvery eyes with a few alternatives in case you can't pull off silvers. I have warmer skin with olive tones and can't always pull off silvery eyeshadows because they make me look tired, but the Dior Smoky Crystal Quint was a surprisingly pretty on! I hope this gives you a few ideas of what types of colors you can use. These may not work for everyone, but these are looks that I've done that work for me.

To recap (in case you haven't read my About Me section), I have dark black/brown hair with red highlights, medium olive/golden skin and use Chanel Shell/Beige Teint Innocence, my eyes are dark brown.

Look Day 4: silvery eyeshadow with rose-pink lips/cheeks

* Note the swatches for the eyeshadows look greenish on my screen for some reason. In real life they are close to what the product photo looks like in the picture near the top.

Alternative if you can't pull of silvers: try champagne, a soft taupe, a sparkley silvery-gold cream shadow and a smokey black eyeshadow

Today's color theme includes bronzey eyes and peachy lips/cheeks with three variations. (Note that Day 1 has been updated as well with a third look.) A Week of Looks I'm Loving Right Now: Day 1

According to my recent survey, some of you mentioned how you loved certain posts, but wanted ideas on how to coordinate the products with other colors. I'm going to do a five-part series of looks I've done recently that I loved. I hope this series will help give you some ideas!

A few things to note ahead of time: I am not a professional makeup artist, but the following looks have been created on my own. My fashion/beauty style is very simple and natural. Style/beauty icons include Charlize Theron, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Winslet, Eva Mendes, Lucy Liu to name a few - all women who embrace their natural beauty with subtle, elegant and classic natural makeup.
