IMATS Los Angeles 2016 + My Mini Haul

This year I finally made it to IMATS Los Angeles in Pasadena, California. This event has been on my radar for such a long time so I was thrilled when MustaeV invited me to attend the Makeup Artist Pro-Card Event on Friday. Since I had never attended one of these events before, I wasn't sure what to expect and it was significantly larger than I expected. For makeup professionals who have attended The Makeup Show, the concept of IMATS is similar - but is open for anyone to attend. I didn't do an exact booth count, but there seem to be a lot more vendors and brands featured at IMATS.

IMATS in Los Angeles is held at the Pasadena Convention Center and the booths were split into two different halls. I looked through the list of attending brands and had a list of booths to visit including Beautylish, MustaeV, Kat Von D Beauty, Make Up For Ever, Anastasia of Beverly Hills, Le Metier de Beaute, Temptu, tarte, Hakuhodo to name a few. I was told by a few other fellow beauty bloggers to expect booths to be extremely busy and packed and they weren't joking. I arrived at 4:30 and stayed until closing at 7. I only made it to a portion of the vendors I had on my list, many had crowds or lines I didn't have patience for. The first brand I went to was Anastasia which had a long line just to submit your purchase requests on a form, and then a 2 hour wait to pick up your items.

I snapped a few pictures as I walked throughout the event. A look at the floor layout, wish I could have gotten an aerial view of the entire setup.

Amazing demonstrations of body art and special effects. The artists are phenomenal.

A look at the MustaeV setup some exciting releases coming out this year were not yet on display, but I can't wait to share them with you later this spring.

Setup on one of the stages (right), a look at Kryolan Professional Makeup Palettes (left):

Viseart Palettes:

Palettes from BH Cosmetics, brushes galore from Hakuhodo:

Beautylish featured a new line from makeup artist Natasha Denona. Right now they offer the Glow System (complexion products) online. The remaining items are expected to launch by the end of February (shadows are supposed to launch end of January). Natasha herself was in attendance and she was so kind to take the time to explain some of her products. I was also thrilled to see @trishalee_w from A Glittery Life working the booth - she's an amazing artist and helped me pick out a blush (I wanted like all of them, but she helped me pick 1 to start with). I will be reviewing the Glow System and more from the Natasha Denona line soon, texture and pigments are really phenomenal and so unique.

Several have asked for a haul post. I didn't buy much - there were a few booths where I had intended to go back to pick up  items, but I didn't have time and I did not have tickets for the other days of the event, so here's a snapshot of what I picked up. I'll have reviews + swatches in the next couple of weeks (as soon as I can). Most items you can buy elsewhere right now. I'm most excited about the Beautylish x Natasha Denona launches that are coming in a few months.
The items I looked at were at full retail price (they might have had discounts for pro-card holders). The Glow Kits were offered at $40 each without sales tax.

I was also very fortunate to receive a generous gift of the Natasha Denona 28 Eyeshadow Palette in Green Brown. It's just so dreamy and from what I swatched at the booth - the textures are super saturated, highly pigmented and gorgeous. I have several of the 5 pan palettes on my wishlist but this one is just phenomenal. I die for the texture! The packaging:

28 shades of stunning green and brown. I am not a green eyeshadow wearer but I lightly swiped the top row on my eyes this morning - texture, pigment and shimmer = OMG.

If you are able to attend one of the IMATS events I highly recommend going. It's a beauty lovers dream come true to visit all the booths and see makeup artists in action. Do be sure to carve out as much time as possible if you're going on 1 day - I thought I could make my rounds in 2 hours, but I guess that was being overly optimistic! You can check out the IMATS website to see where else they will be traveling this year in 2016, there are three dates listed so far:

New York, April 8 - 10
London, June 3 - 6
Vancouver, July 16 - 17

If you're in the Los Angeles area and missed out, be sure to check it out next year. Otherwise if you are a makeup professional, you might want to consider attending The Makeup Show (see their FAQ page to check if you qualify to attend). They will be in Los Angeles later this year in March.

Many thanks again to MustaeV for enabling me to attend this year! Have you been to IMATS before? If yes, please let me know!

I was lucky to get a first hand sneak peek of one the SEVI Linen Towels - it has a lightweight soft and fluid texture. I wish I had this for my Europe trip. It rolls up into a compact roll and makes the perfect coverup for the beach.

The Makeup Show LA March 28-29th, 2015 - Event Preview

The Makeup Show Los Angeles is being held this spring on March 28th and 29th for all beauty professionals and students. This year is the 7th year they will be in LA. Those who attend will have the opportunity to participate in workshops and seminars led by industry experts and makeup artists. The Makeup Show LA will be featuring over 75 beauty brands including MAKE UP FOR EVER, Crown Brush and Temptu PRO, NARS, Smashbox, Pinnacle Cosmetics, The Powder Group and On Makeup Magazine, and Ruby Makeup Academy. Details on ticket information here.

Here is a preview of what you can expect to see at The Makeup Show LA this year. I'm looking forward to playing with these items in the upcoming days:

  • Smashbox is featuring some items in celebration of The Makeup Show LA Smashbox x Donald Robertson Icon gallery. Above is a vibrant red cream Be Legendary Lipstick in Bing.
  • Stila recently launched their Nude Interlude Color Balm Lipstick. Sophie (shown above) was a color sent as part of the press preview kit. It's a super creamy balm-like nude with lots of pigment. There is a chocolate mint scent to it.
  • Ellis Faas will be making a personal appearance at the show this year as a keynote speaker. The Milky Lips come highly recommended by numerous readers but the line is one that I haven't explored very much yet. Above is L201 a burgundy cream.
  • Ruby Makeup Academy has just launched their cosmetics line Ruby Cosmetics. One of the items sent as a preview is their LL Cream in Red Lights a super saturated lip creme.

  • Sephora Collection will be making an appearance at the show as well. Above are a sample of the Sephora Collection Colorful Blushes in Over the Moon (soft lilac), I'm Shocked (bright vivid hot pink), and Flirt It Up (soft peach pink). Also shown is one of the Pro Precision Blush Brushes #73. These come with a clever cap to store them and keep the bristles from getting messed up if you travel with them.

  • Smashbox recently released a Step-By-Step Contour Stick Trio. This is a unique method of cream contouring in chubby pencil form. There are three colors: Highlight is a pale cream, Bronze is a medium tan, Contour is the darkest color which is a brown. (Scroll down below for swatches.) I've never been one to master the cream contour process but these come with visual diagrams of how to use each color based on face shape with placement charts. I'll be experimenting in the upcoming weeks and sharing more thoughts on this.

  • Bioderma Sensibio H20 made its US debut via Beautylish and sold out within 24 hours of the initial launch. It will be featured at The Makeup Show LA this March. (I've been testing this for a few weeks, still need to test it some more, but a review will be posted soon.)
  • Make Up For Ever launched a collection of skin primers called Step 1 Skin Equalizers. There are 10 options for different effects. Above shown is the Nourishing Primer (more cream like) and Hydrating Primer (more gel like). There are 5 primers designed for texture and 5 primers created to add tone to the skin (tinted versions). I'm really looking forward to testing these, especially as the weather starts to shift and my skin needs an update in skincare, primer and foundation. If you've tried these what did you think?

  • SENNA Cosmetics is launching their Brow Shaper Duos and Pro Brow Brush exclusively at The Makeup Show this year. I am very impressed with the brush. The angled tip is dense but soft enough to not feel pokey. The brush at the other end is thick and plush with just the right texture to comb through my brows. For brows I usually use a pencil or brow mascara. Using the powder + wax combination is new to me. I've experimented with it a few times but have been searching for YouTube tutorial videos to see exactly how I'm supposed to use it. The color brunette is a good one for my dark brows. I prefer something slightly lighter than my natural hair color so it doesn't look too dramatic. The pot looks like something that would turn out red but it's actually a good neutral.
  • Pinnacle Cosmetics launched their Eye Lights liquid shimmer eye shadow. There are three shades shown above as part of their preview. Purity is a metallic rose gold, Treasure is a warm golden coppery color, Chrome is a pale silvery shade. These have a slight mousse-like feel. The pigment is rich but blendable. The colors set really fast so you need to apply and blend quickly. Once they set though the color really stays put.

  • Static Nails are pop on nails that are non-damaging to your actual nail. Empire is a mix of beige with black designs. I've never tried pop-on nails before so these will be interesting for me to play with in the next few weeks.

  • MustaeV is joining The Makeup Show for the first time this year. Above is a unique product called The Bloom Pouch. It's a zippered makeup pouch with a magnetic clasp. Above shows how you can store brushes and pencils or other items. Below shows how you can turn it into a vertical brush holder that stands upright.

A few quick swatches of the items shown above:

Ticket information and details on the show online at The Makeup Show LA. It will be located at The California Market Center, 110 East 9th Street, Los Angeles on Saturday March 28th (from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm) and Sunday the 29th (9:00 am to 5:00 pm). You can find the full list of Exhibitors online here.

For more information and updates be sure to follow The Makeup Show via social channels on Facebook, Twitter @themakeupshow, and Instagram @themakeupshow.

Have you been to The Makeup Show before? This will be the first year that I will be attending!

The items featured were sent as part of a press preview courtesy of The Makeup Show.

Sephora Summer Surge Beauty Insider VIB Rouge Event

On Sunday I attended my first Sephora event for VIB Rouge members. Receptions were hosted across the US at select Sephora locations for 4x points on purchases, gifts, samples and access to brand experts and specialists. I brought a friend with me to the reception at South Coast Plaza we showed up bright and early at 9 AM.

We spent nearly the full two hours of the event browsing all the aisles. I was really happy Sephora had brand experts from different vendors on site. There were reps from a number of brands, we chatted with some super friendly reps from Hourglass, SK-II, Glam Glow and Nude. My friend works in the beauty industry and we've both been long time beauty addicts (she's my go-to for recs on hair care and skincare and perfume, so pretty much everything). I really liked that there was no pressure from anyone to buy anything which made our shopping experience very enjoyable. Some shots of the Sephora store, some are a bit blurry, but we were really excited so in the rush, I didn't get the best photos.

The South Coast Plaza store we went to had a Lip Bar, Brow Bar and Foundation Bar where you could get tips on application or color suggestions. We had too much distracting us to sit at any of the beauty booth areas.

There was a small gift bag with samples offered with any $35 purchase. VIB Rouge Members also received a red tote. Our bag included minis of Laura Mercier Foundation Primer, Dr. Jart Beauty Balm, Benefit Watt's Up, Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5 in 1 Cream, Buxom Mascara, Algenist Eye Renewal Balm, Escada Born in Paradise Perfume.

As we walked around the store several reps handed out a few extra samples if we purchased an item or two from their line. Here's the loot by the end of our shopping trip for me. We both had so many things on our wish list and literally had to say to each other "we need to go now" before we did more damage to our wallets.

  1. VIB Rouge Gift Bag with $35 Purchase (contents shown in above detail photo)
  2. Amore Pacific Natural Protector SPF 30 - sample 1 ml packet
  3. Sephora Age Defy Moisture Cream SPF15 - sample 2 ml packet
  4. Glam Glow Thirstymud Hydrating Treatment - sample 3 g packet
  5. Glam Glow Brightmud Eye Treatment - sample 1 g packet, we were told this is supposed to be the best for reducing puffy eyes and brightening the under eye area with 6 different caffeines
  6. Glam Glow Powermud Dual Cleanse Treatment  - sample 3 g packet - I tried this last night and it stung for 1 minute, afterwards the stinging went away and it seemed to by gentle yet effective, will report more on these after testing more
  7. Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer - 5 ml sample
  8. Glam Glow Supermud Clearing Treatment - deluxe 10 g tube
  9. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5-in-1 Styling Cream - 10 ml sample packets
  10. Make Up For Ever HD Powder - Beauty Insider 100 point perk
  11. Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner in Ro(coco) - Beauty Insider 100 point perk
  12. The Original Beautyblender (purchase)
  13. YSL Volupte Sheer Candy 15 and Gloss Volupte 10 (purchase)
  14. Glam Glow Supermud Clearing Treatment (purchase)
  15. SK-II Facial Treatment Cleanser (purchase)
  16. Living Proof No Frizz Smoothing & Frizz Fighting Travel Kit (purchase)
SK-II also had a few minis available, I gave them to my friend since she had never tried the line before. This was my first Sephora event so I did not really know what to expect. I found it to be a fun and relaxing/laid back shopping experience. I liked that they let us bring a guest that didn't necessarily have to be a Sephora Beauty Insider. The staff was really patient and friendly. The reps were so helpful in answering questions. The store was very busy but not over-packed so there was plenty of room to wander without having others bump into you or try to knock you over. The only things I would have liked to have would have been to include a map where the brand reps were and their special stations, the Sephora at South Coast Plaza is the largest I've ever seen and it was easy to get lost. I also think it would have been great if there were step up gifts available although everyone was very generous with samples and the 4x points is (in my mind) huge.

If you missed out, Sephora is still offering the tiered points on purchases through August 10 online and in stores.

Have you ever been to a Sephora event? Did you go to the VIB Rouge Event on Sunday at your local Sephora stores? What did you end up splurging on? Did you learn anything new?
