Color Focus: Nude Pink Lipsticks

I'm a huge fan of natural nude lips but finding a good nude that doesn't wash out my complexion can be tricky. Luckily there are a number of shades that exist that work for my pigmented lips and olive skin. I've been testing a number of nude pinks over the past few months - I wanted to share some of my tried and true along with some new discoveries. Everyone has a different definition of "nude" - there are flesh nudes, pink nudes, peachy nudes, dark brown nudes. Depending on skin tone and lip tones you may find certain nudes work better for you with pink tones versus brownish tones. See some other blogger's favorites and reviews on Beauty Professor, Temptalia and Beautezine.

Here are some that I've found work for me. If you're on the hunt for a new neutral I hope this helps you discover some new options.

  1. By Terry Hyaluronic Sheer Rouge in Nudissimo ($35) is a sheer light nude peachish pink, it has a moisturizing texture with a sheer glossy finish, lasting power is on the shorter side because of the glossy finish but this is a good swipe and go no-fuss sheer
  2. Tom Ford Lip Color Shine Nubile ($48) is a darker nude pink that has a glossy finish but really good coverage for a shine lipstick, it covers my lip entirely and moisturizes well, lasting power is quite good and these have that soft Tom Ford vanilla scent, it's extremely pricey but worth every penny for the formula and coverage
  3. Tom Ford Lip Color Pink Dusk ($49) is a classic pink in Tom Ford's classic lipstick formula, it is a full-coverage cream, it can pull a bit light so you may need to layer a bit of gloss on top, if you're darker than Chanel 30/MAC NC35 and need darker pinks, opt for Pink Adobe or Indian Rose if you want a natural pink (swatches here and here)
  4. Marc Jacobs Lovemarc Lip Gel Role Play ($30) review here, is a dusty rose pink cream, it's easy to wear, has full coverage, lasts long and feels amazing on the lips
  5. Marc Jacobs Lovemarc Lip Gel Severine ($30) is described as a warm beige, it's a wearable nude beige cream that doesn't wash out the complexion, the Marc Jacobs lip gels have a unique gel-like texture in a solid lipstick, these adhere to the lips and feel slightly thick but feel good on the lips, the formula is creamy and feels moisturizing (note testers at Sephora stores can look less than ideal, but I recommend giving these a try)
  6. Lipstick Queen Saint Lipstick Pinky Nude ($22) is a 10% pigment lipstick for but those who are not quite ready for full coverage lipstick but want something with more coverage than a gloss, these are described as sheer, moist and incredibly easy to wear with no-shimmer, I used Pink up to the end of the tube many years ago, Lipstick Queen has since expanded the color range, Pink Nude Saint is a perfect nude pink sheer lipstick that I can see as being flattering on a wide range of skintones, texture and wear is really good for a sheer lipstick
  7. Lipstick Queen Sinner Lipstick Pinky Nude ($22) is a 90% pigment lipstick, Lipstick Queen has corresponding shades in both the Sinner and Saint formula, the colors are pretty close in each formula, Sinner Pinky Nude is more nude while Saint Pinky Nude is more pink, the Sinner formula is a good nude pink that doesn't wash out the complexion, I've been really impressed with the smooth texture and level of coverage, for those who are sensitive to fragranced lip products you will like Lipstick Queen because there is no detectable fragrance
  8. Hourglass Extreme Sheen Lipgloss Canvas ($28) review here, is a high impact gloss that acts more like a liquid lipstick, it's a holy-grail lip product, I recommend this for anyone (see linked review for more details)
  9. Edward Bess Ultra Slick Lipstick Pure Impulse ($32) is my holy grail true nude lipstick, it has a slight hint of pink mixed with beige to give the perfect nude lips, it has a soft fig scent, I've gone through two tubes of this over the years, it's a classic nude color that I can wear for any occasion, it has a creamy finish with a moisturizing feel, in my mind Edward Bess can do no wrong
  10. MAKE Silk Lipstick Cream Pink Clay ($25) is a new brand I've discovered at Barneys, there have been numerous raves about this brand from The Non-Blonde and Café Makeup so I stopped by the counter at Barneys Beverly Hills a few weeks ago, I was thoroughly impressed by all the lipsticks for the rich smooth pigment, it was hard to pick just one color, but I decided on Pink Clay a darker mauve nude pink to try, the formula is truly incredible, it feels like silk on the lips but gives full smooth coverage, I'm definitely going to be adding more colors to my collection in the future
  11. Le Metier de Beaute Lip Creme in Socialyte ($36) is an exclusive shade to the Neiman Marcus in Downtown Dallas designed by Michael Flores, it's a complex pink, nude, coral, rose, I wish it were available at all Le Metier counters, call the Downtown Dallas counter for more details, I believe it's a limited shade
  12. Le Metier de Beaute Hydra Creme Lipstick in Amore ($25) is a cream peachy pink that has a brightening effect on my olive skin, in the tube it looks like a darker pink nude but on my lips it goes on a bit lighter and brighter than what I see in the tube, but this is probably just because I have pigmented lips, coverage is medium but layerable with a moisturizing feel
  13. NARS Satin Lip Pencil Isola Bella ($25) is my perfect nude peach, it's a bit darker than your traditional nude but this is perfect for me because it covers my lip entirely and gives a hint of color so it doesn't wash out the complexion
  14. YSL Rouge Volupte Shine Nude in Private #9 ($35) review here, is a sheer lipstick that feels like a lip balm, these are good swipe and go lipsticks similar in concept to Chanel Rouge Coco Shines, if you like a no-fuss sheer lipstick, these are good lipsticks that are layerable for more color but with a slightly glossy finish, those who like medium to full coverage will find these too sheer

The effects are similar in the fact they are all natural your-lips-but-better kind of shades but each lipstick featured has slightly different undertones, finishes and textures. These aren't all the nudes I've tried or love, but just a few I wanted to feature today. If I had to pick my top five nudes/nude-pinks:
What's your favorite nude pink lipstick? If you can share your favorites and skintone that would be great, I would love to hear what works for you.

  3. Hi Sabrina,

What a gorgeous set of colors! One can never have too many nude lip colors... My favorite amongst your set is probably MARC JACOBS Role Play. The color and finish looks gorgeous on you!

I've been having trouble finding the perfect nude lipstick, myself. I think the closest thing I have to the every-occasion nude pink lippie is NARS Cruising.

  8. Thank you for the timely post! Last week I had a beauty intervention at the Chanel counter. I have been a bright lip wearer for over 30 years. Red, orange red, bright pink, bright coral....a big lip statement was my thing. For decades I've tried to find nudes that didn't make me look like a corpse and just had given up. My Chanel advisor spent hours with me trying all the nude/nudish lipsticks and I'm SO happy to say we were successful! I brought home Camellia and Organdy Rose and I'm stopping in next week to play some more with the light colors. I've been enjoying the freedom of a lip that isn't high maintenance and I've been having fun doing more of an eye statement than in the past. I love the looks of some of your suggestions and will be checking them out as well. Thanks!!

  10. I love this post, so informative. I have such a hard time selecting lipstick colors for my skin tone. Its just so difficult, especially reds and nudes! My favorite color you showed in this post was by far Marc Jacobs Role Play. I also really liked the YSL Rouge Volupte 9, its a bit warmer and I like that.

  11. I adore my Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo in No. 6 as well as Surratt's Fee Soie. I'm NC30, with olive tones, dark brown hair and brown eyes so have stayed far away from nudes for a very long time. Luckily, I've branched out and have found some lovely wearable nudes!

I can't wait to check out the Marc Jacobs Role Play, it looks beautiful.

Oh, I also really like the new Dior Fluid Stick in Whisper Beige and have Kiss Me on its way!

  13. What an amazing array of lipsticks - you really are a nude-lip girl! ;)
While I love the idea of a subdued and natural lip, I find most nude shades unflattering (on myself, and on others). I have brown eyes and hair; a "washed out" lip makes me look like half of my face is missing!!! Very aging effect, I fear.
That being said, I have found my holy graal nude: Dolce e Gabbana Classic Goddess. Instead of being paler than my already pale lips, it is one/two shades darker, but in the same color family (rosy browned beige with an extra hint of warmth that flatters my complexion).
I have medium-fair neutral warm skin. I don't really wear foundation, so I cannot give a good reference. Based on how product swatches look against your skin, I believe we share the very same darkness level, but a slightly different undertone: I am a tad warmer - more yellow orange than olive.
I look forward to reading all the comments!
p.s. Love Nubile on you, and the YSL rouge volupté.

I want to get my hands on the nudes in that line but I ma holding off as I have a lot of nude lipsticks to finish off first! :P Great post and pictures Sabrina! Bookmarking it for future! :D

  21. Ah, I was hoping MAKE's Pink Clay pulled more neutral, but seeing it here, I know it'll be too warm. I'm a consummate bold lip girl, but every woman should have a good nude in her makeup arsenal. I have a few I've found that are pretty good but have yet to hit the holy grail. I'm cool toned and fair and find that most nudes are just too warm on me. The search for the grail continues!

    1. Hi Veronica. I have the same problem -- all "nude" lipsticks are too warm for my cool, pale skin.

Which ones have you liked so far? (Understanding that you are still looking for your HG.)

      Thank you!

    2. Hi Christina! Sorry if this is a bit of a late reply. I've been a bit busy at work, so I hope you catch this message!

For everyday looks, I like Maybelline's Born With It. It's a tiny bit warm but there's enough pink and it's just sheer enough that it pulls neutral (almost cool, actually) on me. The only drawback to it is that it contains a bit of sparkle, and I prefer my nudes more satin or cream. Maybelline did release a gorgeous shade called Nude Embrace that was a pinky-mauve nude and works perfectly on my NW10 skin. Unfortunately, it was an LE shade, and I can't recommend anything from the rest of the nudes line because they're all too warm or brown. (If you can find it though, I'd say go ahead and try it!)

For slightly higher end, I really like MAC's Innocence, Beware, though sadly, the Cremesheen formulation is drying on me. If you can wear it, though, it's definitely worth a look. (I've heard Velvet Teddy is quite nice, as well, but I haven't tried it personally.) For a really intense nude, I love NARS Madere, though it is a matte so it demands your lips be in perfect condition. I also like Urban Decay's old Naked pencil, though it's definitely the warmest nude I own. I can only really get away with it in the summer months on my "tanned" NW15 days.

For lipgloss, I like Bobbi Brown's Bronzed in the High Shimmer formulation. It's definitely warmer toned, but there's a mauve undertone to the brown, and it's semi-opaque enough that it doesn't overpower your natural lip color.

      Hope that helps! :)

  25. N.Nein, I got tired of getting the voicemail so I just asked to talk to someone in cosmetics and she transferred me to the main cosmetics line. The SA found 2 Socialyte's in the stock room. I only bought one so there still may be one available.

  30. Great post. I've been having a tough time finding the right pink nude color ever since they discontinued my previous favorite.

  31. I seem to be the opposite, I need my nudes to be peachy brown because I have red hair and fair skin and lips that are already very pink. If I use a pinky nude, I look dead. I particularly hate when nude looks like you painted your lips to match your skin. These colors are much harder to find than the pinky nudes. Smashbox Chai is good when my hair leans towards brownish blonde than red. The reddder the hair is, the peachier the lipstick has to be. Armani has a lip penicil #10 that worked great with all my light peachy browns, but I think it was discontinued. Nars had Corinthe, but that was discontinued too. For summer, Two Faced In the Buff will be good with a liner, I'm still looking for perfection.
