Tom Ford Oud Wood Eau de Parfum

Tom Ford recently released a series of Oud Fragrances to expand on one of his earlier releases Oud Wood Eau de Parfum. The three scents released in smoky grey-colored packaging include the Oud Wood, Oud Fleur and Tobacco Oud. At the counters I fell in love with the classic Oud Wood. After testing a small sample made at the Tom Ford counter, I went back a week later and purchased the 1.7 oz/50ml version for $210. It's the most I have ever spent on a perfume, but well worth the price given how much I adore the scent and it's lasting power.

Small 4ml samples made at the Tom Ford counter:

I've tried Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille which is a lovely bold and rich vanilla. I had it on my wishlist for over a year but could never bring myself to purchase a full size bottle. Right when I had decided to buy it, I tried the Oud Wood series and Oud Wood blew me away. I still decided to test for at least a few days before committing to a full size. Oud Wood is described as "Exotic Rose Wood and Cardamom, blended with exuberant Chinese Pepper, envelop the wearer in warmth. Eventually, the center exposes a smokey blend of rare Oud Wood, Sandalwood and Vetiver. Finally, the creamy scents of Tonka Bean, Vanilla and Amber are revealed."

It's a strong and bold fragrance without being too overpowering. It does lean more masculine but I still think it's unisex enough for a woman to wear. It has a lovely mix of vanilla, amber and sandalwood. It is a creamy warm scent. The oud in the scent is noticeable but on the softer side when mixed with the Tonka Bean and Vanilla. It wears very well on the skin and like most Tom Ford fragrances I've tried, lasts all day long without fading. I recommend reading the reviews on Fragrantica, Basenotes.net, Kafkaesque and Temptalia.

It usually takes me a long time to decide to purchase a fragrance. Even after careful consideration and time, I don't always end up choosing ones that work for me (ie Jo Malone Ginger Biscuit, and I really wanted to love this one). After a month of wearing Tom Ford Oud Wood, I've found my perfect winter fragrance. It's proven to be one of my favorites that I've tried (my other current favorite is Frederic Malle Carnal Flower). Oud Wood is strong enough to last all day long but mellow enough to not be overpowering and make me self conscious while wearing this to work.

I'm still considering Tobacco Vanille as I've read it layers well with Oud Wood. My other favorite by Tom Ford is Santal Blush. For now I'm 100% smitten with Oud Wood. Given the high price tag and number of perfumes I'm still working my way through, I'm going to wait a while before looking into buying another Tom Ford fragrance.

Tom Ford Oud Wood is available at Nordstrom, Saks, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and Tom Ford Boutiques. The scent is available in a variety of sizes and body products. I bought the Shower Gel for my husband as I found it to be more woody/earthy and more masculine in scent. Oud Wood comes in the following options:
Do you have a Tom Ford favorite? I'd love to hear about your experiences and thoughts!

  1. I love the idea of this but don't even want to try it. I just can't justify spending that much on a perfume. I'm sure they use premium ingredients but I'm also sure I'm paying for the name.

  2. Hey Sabrina, I really must spray this on at a counter at some point to see how I feel about it! I'm big on vetiver, so if that is prominent I'm in!

  5. I fell in love with Oud Wood, too! I just bought the same size you did -- however, for some reason (perhaps because it's so strong), I thought it would have a dropper, not a spray nozzle, and only the larger ($290) bottle does. I had been using the 4mL sample (and only the tiniest dab!), so now I'm torn; I don't really want to spend another $80 to have a dropper, but I really (really) love the fragrance! Do you think using a full spray is too much?

    1. Interesting that the $290 version has a dropper. I did not know that!

I really wanted the $290 version because it is a better buy value-wise. However I couldn't bring myself to spend $300 (with tax included). The smaller bottle does apply a lot more than dropping but I feel it disperses the fragrance evenly and quite well. It doesn't apply too much but then I spray from a distance.

If you're 100% in love enough for the larger bottle I would say go for it!

  6. I love love love Tom Ford's Black Orchid. It is so warm and cozy smelling. I want to wrap myself up in it like a blanket by the fire. I am rationing out my 4ml sample on myself right now but I assure you when it is gone I will be giving Mr Ford $210 (or $290). It is my favorite perfume discovery in years. My boyfriend loves Oud Wood (although I agree it works well as a unisex scent) and he is also rationing out his 4ml sample until he gets a big bottle. I just love both these scents so much.

  7. It would be actually less expensive if you got 3.4 oz. size. It will be only 80$ more. I always go for 100 ml size if I really like something. I just recently got one of my all time faves in Sisley Eau Du Soir perfume from Neiman. They had a really nice deal. For 100ml -290$, I got also body lotion free, which normally is over a 100$. I do not see any problem to pay for a good perfume if you really like it. But I always go for a larger size to save money. I try to spend less on make up, this way I can buy other things I like. I still use the best of the best make up, just not buying 10 mascaras or enormous amount of lipsticks, bronzers or highlighters which at the end of the day I will not be able to use anyway. I was trying different samples of Tom Ford perfumes, but none of them won my heart yet:). Did not try this one.

  9. I adore Neroli Portofino (which I managed to snag back when it was I think $195 for 1.7oz). I've had it for almost two years, use it all the time, and still haven't finished it. I've never been a "perfume person" and honestly had never worn it before...most perfumes just smell, well, perfume-y to me...but it was love at first scent. I was at NM a few months ago and got the chance to smell a handful of other TF fragrances and so many of them are just phenomenal I left without buying one...I couldn't choose!

    1. Neroli Portofino is amazing! I'm the same as you when visiting the TF counter. I try to smell one each time I go, but it can be overwhelming and oh so difficult to choose just one :)

  10. Have you tried les Exclusifs? Once you've made the leap away from mass-market fragrance, there's no turning back. Though my purchase was "31, rue Cambon", the SA was a doll and gave me loads of samples, so now I am head-over-heels for "Bois des Iles". I also like "Sycomore". Not sure if they have oud in their repertoire, though.

    1. I've tried a few samples of the Chanel Les Exclusifs, I've tried Jersey and Beiges, both of which I really liked but they gave me a horrible migraine. I do have a sample of Bois de Iles and Sycamore which I don't think I've tried yet. I will need to try those soon. The bottles are so beautiful!

  11. Hi Sabrina, happy new year! I saw that you have a small sample of Cafe Rose. What do you think of it? I am still thinking about it since October, because I am so loyal to Serge Lutens! x

    1. Hi Rena - Cafe Rose is such a beautiful smelling rose. I have been trying my small sample here and there. It's hard to tell if I like it enough to buy the full size. Serge Lutens is amazing so I can see why it's hard to try a different brand.

If you can get a sample of Cafe Rose I would say try it for a few weeks. There are sites I've seen that will sell decants or samples for a small price.

Or if you can get to a Tom Ford counter with the full fragrance line I am sure they can make a sample for you.

  12. Just went to Neiman Marcus in Beverly hills today . Love that store the best. Very nice atmosphere. Got eyeshadow in orchid haze - Love! And asked for a small sample of oud wood. It's actually the nicest I tried from TF.

    1. Ooooh!!! Beverly Hills is amazing. And Orchid Haze is one of the best quads they make - so great pick!! I agree Oud Wood is one of the best, although there are so many amazing scents by Tom Ford.

  13. This is such an incredible scent! I've owned in the past Private Blend perfumes and still purchasing them today (in spite of the 'high-end' price tag) and the Oud Wood "take" is, probably, the best of the all - the Jewel of the Private Blend collection - if I may let myself get carried away a little :) It's the only scent that has that significant "Character" which stands above all the perfumes I've ever worn and still get noticed by people around me. Worth every penny - this is how luxury smells like!
