Chanel Rouge Allure Radieuse #217 | Holiday 2013

This season Chanel has released a limited selection of lip colors for the holiday collection. I ordered Rouge Allure Radieuse #217 a cool pink cream ($34, limited-edition) sight unseen. Although I usually find most Chanel lip colors naturally flattering and easy to work with, Radieuse proved to be one of the few I've purchased from the line that does not work so well for me. Radieuse is absolutely gorgeous in the tube and swatched on the arm it's quite lovely. On my pigmented lips and olive skin it turns very powdery-looking and blue. There is a sharp contrast between my natural lip tone and the slight transparent quality of the lipstick which results in a darkish looking ring around the edges. The quality and texture is still quite good like most Chanel lipsticks. Although I do try to go outside my comfort zone with makeup, I found Radieuse just didn't work for me. It's a bit too too pale and has too much blue. Even my husband commented that he was not a fan of this color on me.

Here it is swatched:

To fix this one I blended a heavy layer of Chanel Nude Lipliner and Armani Gloss d'Armani in 109.

I think this might be the palest cream pink lipstick I own. I pulled a few to compare: Burberry English Rose Lip Cover (discontinued), Pink Heather Lip Mist (reviewed here) and Armani Rouge Ecstasy #103 (reviewed here).

If you can pull off pale baby pinks (I usually cannot unless there is some nude peach or brown or rose mixed in) you will like this one. Those with olive medium skin (like me) or darker may find this one a bit too pale. If it had shimmer mixed in I probably could pull this one off a bit easier. You're mileage may vary with this color. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you've tried this shade. Perhaps I'm being too picky with this one - but I will be playing more with the color to see if I can grow to like it more.

Chanel Rouge Allure Radieuse is available at Chanel counters now. Online at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks and Chanel.com.

  1. Hi Sabrina,

It was so nice to see your review of CHANEL Radieuse, and how it swatches on your skin! I love light pink tones, so I was pretty excited to see Chanel release a color in that category and made sure to pick one up. I'm hoping to try it soon, once I have the time for photos :)

  2. I am sorry that it doesn't work on you. But, it may be a perfect shade for my colouring, I plan to check this out when the collection is out near me!

    1. Thanks for the input - I think you have the perfect coloring for this shade. One of my best friends is fair with darker hair, she can always pull off these colors SO beautifully! It's seems like a very Marina-ish shade :)

  4. Hey Sabrina, I swatched this last week and I made the same observation. It'll probably work better for fairer, cooler-toned girls. So sorry to hear you're not loving it! It does get better with some layering though. Hopefully you'll find a combo you love!

  5. hi!! i have completely different skin tone than yours, i'm extremely fair with pink undertones. i too had issues with this lipstick and, i didn't like how it looked on me. check out chanel's holiday makeup video. you can see it on nordstrom's sight. the model jac is featured wearing this shade along with another. i absolutely love this model and, it's the first time that i didn't like how she looked. that's my opinion of course. xo.

  6. I'm NC10-15 and had the same experience Sabrina. So sad, because it is so gorgeous in the tube. I think you really need cool undertones for this one.

  7. I sympathize--I'm pale with dark hair and when I swatched this it looked like pink chalk, so I passed. Adore your blog, and your archives! Thanks for your reviews!!!

  8. I love the way this looks on you in the photos - gorgeous! If it looks this good in person, then it is worth the extra effort of combining a few other lip products to wear :)

  9. This is such a pitty!!! It looks gorgeous in the pan!!! And after looking at your pics, I know it won't work for me, Burberry English Rose and Pink Heather are among the lightest shades I can go in lipsticks -medium olive with pigmented lips too.

  10. The pictures look great! I have never before thought of blending two lip products - maybe I'll try it out. Are your lips naturally that plump??

  11. This looks exactly like two discontinued Chanel lipsticks I own: Chintz Rouge Coco #35 and Evasion Rouge Coco Shine #48. Both are far too cool/blue-toned for me and I never wear them, so I'll have to give Radieuse a miss.

  12. Hi - I have admired your blog for quite some time now and for some reason, I have never commented! Nevertheless, I had the urge to speak up tonight because I wanted to comment on this lipstick. Although I see what you are saying about the lip color being a bit too blue, etc., for your skin tone/color, I actually really like it on you. I think it would nice to wear every once in awhile just for something different - I think it's quite flattering! Thanks for sharing and I absolutely LOVE your blog. I look forward to it every single day!

  13. Thanks for reviewing Radieuse. I've been hoping you would. :) I was drawn to Radieuse on first seeing the collection, yet even before reading your post something made me wonder if it might be too light for me. While I have much lighter skin than yours, I was still hesitant about it, and your swatches/experience have convinced me that I wouldn't wear it well. So thanks very much for your help!

  15. Sabrina, is that a blue Hermes clic on your wrist? Did you break down and buy another? Loved your post about your new bracelet on Styled Notes.

  16. Hi Sabrina,
I have a weakness for soft pink shade. Thanks for the lovely swatch! I'll go down to Chanel counter soon :)

  17. I actually think this color could look really pretty especially when paired with the liner and gloss to make it more wearable.
