Meeting Edward Bess

I've been enamored with Edward Bess since 2009 (first posts here and here) but I had never met Edward Bess or seen any of his products in person at Bergdorf Goodman. Everything I've fallen in love with has been ordered sight-unseen. From my first phone call (long before they knew I had a blog), I've been thoroughly impressed by their excellent customer service, spot-on descriptions and never ending patience with my questions about the colors, depth, pigment and texture of their products.

I've been dying to go to NY to see everything in person but my school and work schedules have not allowed me much travel freedom in the past 3 years. I have relied heavily on Susan from Bergdorf Goodman and Krista (no longer at BG) with their over-the-phone descriptions. They have always given me a good idea of what to expect and the products usually exceed my expectations. I was thrilled to learn that his brand recently expanded to a new location at Neiman Marcus Beverly Hills and was ecstatic to learn he would be making an appearance the same weekend I had planned to be in LA.

Meeting Edward Bess was surreal. Those who have had the pleasure of working with him know how wonderful, charming and beautiful he is both over the phone and in person. My friend of Jonesy and I were delighted to meet two of his artists, Leah and Jaime - both insanely gorgeous (inside and out) and talented makeup artists (trained from the best)! While I was at the counter, I observed at least 5 other women of all different ages and skintone who had their makeup done with Edward Bess products - each left glowing. The products enhanced their natural beauty in a way that was nothing short of radiant perfection.

Even though I was captivated by Edward, I tried to take note of what was being used on others. A darker skinned woman looked glowing with Deep Lust lipstick and Night Eyeshadow. A fairer skinned girl looked gorgeous with Blush Allure Lipstick topped with Sweet Dreams Gloss combined with Island Rose Compact Rouge on the cheeks. Another was wearing what I assume had to be his Midnight Bloom lipstick, a touch of bronzer and a classic simple eyeliner. All gorgeous!

Edward Bess:

I could go on and on gushing but I know everyone has been dying to know what Edward used when he did my makeup (yes, the highlight of my day!!). I was so caught up chatting with him I barely noticed he was applying my makeup. His makeup skills are phenomenal - have you checked out his video tutorials yet? (See them on EdwardBess.com.) What he used on me:

Skin:
Sheer Satin Foundation in Beige
All Over Seduction in Sunlight to highlight here
Ultra Luminous Bronzer in Daydream here, here
(everyone wanted this applied on them!)
Blush Imperiale in Soft Orchid here and here

Eyes:
Eyebase in the lightest shade (not yet released, to be named soon)
Ultra Luminous Eyeshadow in Storm on lids here
Ultra Luminous Eyeshadow in Mirage to highlight here
Defining Eyeliner in Deep Black (not shown)
Bess-Lash Mascara in Deep Black (not shown)

Lips:
Deep Shine Lip Gloss in Nude Satin here

I believe I've reviewed most of the listed items before - it will require a bit of searching through the archives if you want more details but below are pictures and swatches of the items that he used on me - only of the items I own. Disclosure: all items have been purchased by me. Brushes and foundation are new, they will be reviewed at a later date. I do not have the eye base, black eyeliner or black mascara so I supplemented the swatch with Urban Decay's Zero. The foundation has been swatched in the corner to show you it's not quite as dark as an untouched compact looks.

Three views of the swatches:

I left with great ideas on how to coordinate his products in ways I hadn't thought of before. Hours later when I arrived back at home, my husband said he loved the makeup Edward used on me - a huge compliment as he typically says "they used too much" after most makeovers. The look was husband-approved all the way :)

Having his entire line in front of me for the first time, I should have played with more but in my excitement I forgot to try his concealer and the lipsticks and glosses I do not own. I will have to save them for my next visit, hopefully at the Bergdorfs counter in NYC. Women were swooning over the counter and all his products eager to try each and every item and his bronzer was selling like crazy. I believe it has reached holy grail status for more than just myself - and rightly so.

I had so many questions I wanted to ask Edward - unfortunately they all went right out the window. I was simply too caught up in the excitement speaking with him and his staff, seeing his line in person for the first time was overwhelmingly fun. I forgot all the things I wanted to ask him. I was floored when he told me practically everyone who visits his counter in NY mentions my blog and that even UK bloggers at his Zuneta launch event were buzzing about my small Beauty Look Book blog. Thank you to my readers for your support!

To Edward, Leah and Jaime - thank you so much for your kindness and help! Laura and I were thrilled to meet each of you and were happily noted your counter was the busiest at Neimans! It's fabulous the Edward Bess brand is doing so well in Beverly Hills and we wish you all the best and are eagerly looking for your eye bases to be released very soon :)

  1. I HAVE met Edward Bess! In BG back in October 2009. He was--IS--one of the most gracious persons I've ever met. He did my makeup *twice* to create two looks I'd been wanting to develop. A nude look, and then one with red lipstick. I was so excited (and nervous), I was shaking like a leaf. This only made clearer his unending spring of sincere kindness--he definitely loves people, skin, and makeup.

Over time, I've discovered that I like Chanel's lipstick and gloss formulas over Edward Bess's (although I retain a few of his lip pieces), but so much of his other products are HGs. I can easily imagine having only EB makeup. It's always perfect.

  2. I am so glad you finally got to meet Edward! For some reason, he is almost always at the BG counter whenever I go there - he is such a beautiful and unassuming person! He truly finds the beauty in each and every woman. I just love your blog!

  3. I met Edward at the Zuneta blogger event, and he was absolutely genuinely lovely - kind, courteous and interested in everyone. A true gentleman.

The line is just effortless - I can look finished with a single eyeshadow and lipstick, and a sweep of bronzer. Love it, and love your reviews. x

  4. You can take the gentleman out of the South, but you can't take the South out of the gentleman! Edward is the epitome of natural charm and graciousness. When he did my make-up, I requested something that would put me in mind of dawn's pearlescent pink light and a steaming cup of café au lait enjoyed out on the patio. He used delicate pinks, nude, and soft chocolate to create a look for me that was beyond beautiful and had me feeling younger than springtime--no small feat as I'm nudging 64 ;-)

There is nothing gimmicky about Edward's esthetic or his products. There is no razzle-dazzle, glitter, and glitz. Instead, his products create looks of refined elegance, sophistication, and ease. Here's wishing him many years continuing success.

  5. It sounds like you had such an amazing time. I met Edward at the Zuneta launch and he is such a gentleman and truly genuine. One of my favourite memories is of Edward applying makeup on Grace, a real thrill. I will confess that every time I wear an EB lipstick or compact rouge, I'm transported back to that day because of the fig scent.

I love the look of the new eyeshadows. I still don't have own any of his eye products which I must rectify. I'm lemming the bronzer too after a post this week. I think some shopping is in order!

Thank you for the lovely post. It sounds like you really enjoyed the experience.

  6. Perfect wrap up of our visit! I was thoroughly charmed by E.B and I am still swooning!!
I knew a little about his product going into the event but it was amazing being able to test the product firsthand with the adorable and extremely knowledgable girls at the counter! It's now official I am beyond obsessed with his concealer- my new HG concealer. Looking forward to exploring even more of the line!
Can't wait until we can go back to the E. Bess counter at Neiman's!!
Thanks so much for introducing me to the line!

  7. Yes, I met Edward at BG 2 weeks ago and I also was instantly entranced by him! I've seen his counter before, but never stopped, and when he asked me where I'd heard of him, of course I told him your blog.

  8. How much fun to see all his products at once! I always look forward to your Edward Bess reviews, and it's nice that you are gaining national recognition for all the hard work you do for the rest of us. :)

  9. I was also able to meet Edward recently at the Neiman Marcus counter. He did a wonderful job doing my makeup! He was so friendly and personable. We chit-chatted quite a bit. In fact, he encouraged me to start my own blog, so that's just what I did! You can find me at glamandgrace.blogspot.com. I've posted a few reviews on his products, as well as other products I purchased that day! I would love if you could all hop on over to my blog, check it out, and follow me! I promise there are exciting and fun things in store! Can't wait to see you all there!

  10. After this post, I really want to check out some EB products - I admit before, I didn't pay much attention to your EB posts because I thought "if it's only available in one store in the country what's the point." Now i do think this is a special cosmetics line. I spent some time looking at Edward's website. If I could ask him anything, it would be what he uses for his hair! His hair is SO beautiful and healthy! I wonder what products he uses on it? Oh, and I cannot wait to read your review of his foundation. I have never found a foundation I am happy with. thanks!

  11. Haha, I am the "glowing" darker skinned woman in night eye shadow and deep lust lipstick - I only learned you were Sabrina of the Beauty Look Book until after you left and wanted to thank you for all your wonderful reviews of Edward Bess. I would never even have heard of his line without you. Thanks for everything.

  12. I love the color palette he used for your makeup! Everything looks so "soft focus" next to each other. I'd never heard of Edward Bess before reading your blog either--- now I'm going to make sure to seek out his counter at BG next time I'm in New York. I just read Elizabeth's comment and had a good laugh. What a small world =)

  13. I've never met him in person but have spoken with him on the phone a few times. He was so polite and enthusiastic as well as spot on with his color recs. He even signed the bottom of my Lip Wardrove for me.

I do love your reviews so please keep 'em coming!

  15. Hi Sabrina,
I am so happy you finally met Edward. I know I have mentioned many times before that having him do my makeup last year in NYC for my birthday dinner was one of the best Birthday treats I ever had. He's a true Southern Gentleman. I loved how he talked about tools and hardware stores with my husband and then we gushed over colors! He eased my fears of certain colors not working well for my skin tone by saying how he designed his colors for all skin tones while paying special attention to deeper skin tones (like mine).

I remember telling him that I learned about his line through your blog and he knew who you were immediately and said he hoped to meet you in person one day.

I am so glad he did!

Your makeup sounds fabulous and it's always a plus to get a "your makeup looks nice" from the hubby rather than an odd look and strange silence.

  16. I can't believe you didn't post a picture for us of your finished look!! I was dying to see what it looked like on you. Gorgeous colors and what a wonderful experience. Isn't it nice to meet someone who is so creative and NICE???? I wish Edward Bess all the success in the world!!

  17. I just had to say that I'm really happy you got to meet Edward Bess. I'm in love with his makeup because of you, and only hope that someday I will be able to have my makeup done by him. Thanks so much for your passion for makeup and beauty!

  18. I love the colors he chose for you, Sabrina! Even though I am NC15 I believe many of those colors would also work for my skin tone with the exception of foundation, of course. I am am anxious to read more of your EB product reviews as we don't have a counter here in Indiana.

  19. What a great experience! I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Edward but have a few of his products and hope to acquire more in the future. I've seen so many great items here on your blog. I LOVE the colors he chose for you! The Storm eyeshadow looks especially gorgeous :) Thanks for sharing!

  21. I loved reading this post and can't wait to try more of Edward's products. As we are moving back to the East Coast this summer, I will plan to visit Bergdorf's in the next year and hopefully get a makeover at this counter.

Keep up the great posts Sabrina!

  22. Hi Sabrina,

I met Edward today at the Bergdorf counter in New York, and I couldn't agree more with what everyone else has been saying!

Fortunately for me the counter wasn't too busy this afternoon, so I had the good luck to chat with him one on one for a while. He showed me several brown/taupe eyeshadows, and ended up applying Mystery on me. I usually shy away from visible color on my lids, but it looked great! I also have no crease, but he was able to apply the color expertly.

I also tried the Daydream bronzer, and the color was really natural without the slightest hint of orange. I was really impressed with how each shade looked so unassuming in the pan, but applied beautifully. I was also impressed by his knowledge of how each color works on each person's skintone. Definitely the most knowledgeable and helpful makeup artist that has ever helped me! Even my boyfriend had a good time joining in the conversation and really liked the colors used on me. It was really a pleasure to visit him!

    P. S. He asked if I had heard of the line via beauty blogs, and I said yes. When I told him I had read your blog, he told me that he had met you a few weeks ago :)
