Loving Right Now: Shades of Grey

As we transition to fall, I find that grey is a good safety zone for fashion and beauty when coordinated with other neutrals and even warm shades. Grey accessories also are great because they're versatile in that they are easy to incorporate into everyday wear. For the kitchen, I lean towards clean white porcelain for my serving pieces. I have one small Le Creuset in Dune (yes, boring I know) which I love, but just added a beautiful grey Staub oval cocette to my kitchen. The items I'm loving right now:

Makeup: Sultry Greys for Eyes, Shades of Silver and Taupe for Nails - Nars Tzarine, Bobbi Brown Rock, Chantecaille Meteorite, Chanel Gris, Bobbi Brown Steel Cream Eyeshadow, Dior Argentic, Chanel Trapeze & Particuliere

See Trapeze swatched here. See Particuliere + comparisons/dupes here.

Clothes: In my closet there are so many shades of grey. J.Crew and Banana have some beautiful silk tops right now that are great for layering and transitioning from day to evening. They have a good range of greys right now. I'm in love with the Aluminum Blouses from Jcrew - they're almost a blue-grey.

Left:
Banana Republic Tee
J.Crew Lace Skirt
Havaianas in Grey
MJ Large Single Bag

Middle:
Banana Republic Silk Cascade Ruffle Shell
(online here, dark grey worn is instore only)
Paige Denim
Banana Strappy Sandals
LV Pouchette

Right:
J.Crew Pippy Top Aluminum (see here)
J.Crew Pencil Skirt Grey
Michael Kors Pumps

Shoes: As much as I love heels, I'm more of a flip-flop sandal kind of girl. I think my Havaianas are my most favorite most-worn shoes. Tory Burch also has good sandals. I have yet to find a good pair of grey colored heels - most that are within my budget are too light for my taste.

Accessories:
Gucci Sunglasses found at Off Fifth for a steal (Originally $245, marked down to $90)! Marc Jacobs Large Single in Grey Fall 2010, my newest splurge

Kitchen:
Staub just arrived at Williams Sonoma stores and I must say they are beautiful. I have been a huge fan of Le Creuset, but having a smaller kitchen have held off on expanding my cookware pieces. I bought my first Le Creuset 3 years ago in the 2 1/4 quart size, little did I know just how little would fit inside (definitely not a full pot roast). But I'm drawn to things in a "mini" size - they're always so cute! When I saw the trio of mini Staub cocottes at Williams Sonoma I knew I had to have them. They are running a promotion of the trio as a gift with the purchase of the 4 1/2 quart oval so it was the perfect excuse for me to upgrade to a larger cast iron pot. Now I can make a full pot roast :) I think the little cocottes will be perfect for a side of baked mac and cheese. I really would have loved to get the basil color - it seems like the most beautiful shade of green - but alas, that is online only. I love the grey though!

Do you have anything grey that you love?

  3. This is such a fun post!

Sabrina, sometime could you share with us a comparison of the Dior single, Chantecaille and Burberry shadows? I'm wondering how they all compare as far as texture, wear, etc. I'm looking to splurge on some new neutrals for fall and will be ordering online - taking a risk!

  5. Tali - TY! Stone-beige-grey shoes would be amazing to find. I saw the perfect pair of Jimmy Choos a couple years ago in that color and I so regret not buying them!

LostEmilie - on the left is Chanel Trapeze, I don't know if it's still made, but check your local counters.

LoriJ - I can try right now. First I want to say I can never really get any eyeshadow (except MUFE Aqua Creams) to truly last past noon. Most eye bases are too dry for my eyes - I think they are intended for oily lids, but mine aren't oily so most cake on my skin or flake.

Dior's Singles are a powder, but with a slight cream texture - hard to describe but they are extremely pigmented and either full mattes or full shimmers. If you search my blog there should be swatches of Argentic somewhere. It's easy to blend, rich in color, shade selection is limited though.

Chantecaille's have a soft texture. I think it's hit or miss on the shades in my opinion. Some are very pigmented, others are semi-sheer. You can't go wrong with this line for neutrals, although they are on the pricey side. My favorites are Sel and Meteorite.

Burberry's are the softest without being crumbly (like NYX). For swatches, check out Cafe Makeup, Orange2LA, KarlaSugar - I really love Almond and Gold Trench, so beautiful. They are pigmented but have finely milled shimmer (with the exception of a few shades like Rosewood) so the result is a luminous glow.

My recommendation is to go by color. If you have a color in mind, then search each line - they are all pretty different and have different shades/styles. All are high quality. I think you'll be happy with any of those 3 lines as long as you know what types of colors you like.

    HTH!

  6. I love smokey greyish colors. I own the new Nars duo, of course, also BB cream e/s in Galaxy, Benefit Skinny Jeans, its MUFE Aquacream equivalent. Grey nailpolish, of course, I still love the one from the Mac Hello Kitty collection.
I also have a lovely grey pencil skirt and am waiting for these tights to arrive to wear them together: http://www.greenky.fr/collants-les-queues-de-sardines/163-collant-daphne-les-queues-de-sardines.html

  7. i LOVE greys =) Just curious, do you prefer trapeze or particuliere? And where if that ruffled top from in the first picture (middle row, right pic)?

  8. Musing on Beauty - great grey picks! I never caved on that MAC HK np. I have my eye on RBL Stormy though!

Connie - I love both shades. They are too different to love one more than the other. The ruffled top is from Banana Republic. I added the details/link for you, but it appears that dark grey color I got isn't online.

  10. I've been obsessed with greys lately too! This post spoke to me. All I ever pick out in the racks is grey grey grey! (and black) haha. I'm in love with your Marc Jacobs purse, oh my!

I day I hope I can find nice grey shoes too.
I think the grey pot and the dune pot together look so nice!

  12. Hey there! So funny you should post this today. We are having a horribly (or wonderfully) gray day here and for the first time all summer, I broke out my grays! It is that time!! Love all your grays so much.

  13. i LOL at the pots!!! i can't believe you sneaked them into this post but so right!

as usual, what a classy girl you are.

  15. What a great post Sabrina!

Why do I not have grey Havianas? I will be finding myself a pair pronto! I probably wear my Havianas more that any other shoe, also! and I've got a pretty awesome shoe collection! Just can't help what you love!

I, too, am smitten with grey! You know what I love to wear with grey? Leopard print!!!! I'm sure you've done it, if not give it a try. Leopard print ups the ante just enough to keep the look from being too sedate! Use judiciously however! Or not! ; ) All of the greys that you've chosen look particularly beautiful with you skin tone! Yowza!

ps.... I have RBS Stormy, go ahead and cave it's gorgeous!

And thanks for reminding me tho wear my Particular and Trapeze! and Gris! Aaaaad Meteorite!

  16. My long Rag and Bone cashmere cardigan I bought at the Barney's outlet in Orlando, FL for $100? I think it originally retailed for $300. I also love my grey flat knee boots I bought at Target for $20. I bought a pair of faded grey skinny jeans for my 2yr old daughter from Gap Kids - I just wished the adult version looked just as cute on me as it does on her!

And because of you, I think I'm going to start saving up for that grey quilted Marc Jacobs bag too!

  17. Sabrina, I meant to tell you that if most bases/primers dry out your lids, give Kanebo Sensai a try. Gaia, The Non Blond, recommended it in one of her posts. I tried it and have been using it ever since. It's Gaia's go to base as well. It's nurturing, moisturizing, and has subtle optical brighteners to illuminate the eyelids. Just a tiny bit will do. Pat it on and let it set for a moment or two; then you're ready for your shadows. The SA at Neiman's in the Topanga mall gave me a generous sample and, when I thanked her, she said she knew I'd be back for a full size. She was right!

  18. completely agree. i swear by shades of grey for makeup and clothes. i think it's the most flattering color for most skin tones. more so that brown, beige and taupe colors.
    great post

  19. Eileen - TY for the recommendation! I will definitely check out that eye primer!

Stephanie - LOL, I'm glad I'm not the only one. Sometimes I feel so unimaginative with grey, black and white, but they're so easy to wear and it's what I'm comfortable in. I like my Dune and Grey cast irons too! Most of my friends like the bright ones - I'm the one lone boring person in my bunch.

Michelle - TY! I think there are some really nice blouses out right now that aren't too pricey!

LuckyRedLisa - Oh no! Hopefully the grey goes away soon. It's been a grey summer here too, we just got sun 2 weeks ago. Today was so hot. Did you get your Large Single yet?

Jojoba - LOL, yes I was sneaky :) Clearly I've had a bit too much time on my hands. DH is out of town on a business trip again - he needs to come back soon to entertain me.

Rachel - Yay, another grey lover. It really does go with everything!

Lori - I need more Havainias too. They are the most comfortable sandals I have. I need to stop with the TB and Jcrew sandals - they're cute, but not the easiest on my feet always. I don't have any leopard skirts. I just have one Rebecca Taylor leopard top and a couple printed Jcrew sweaters. I need to try that idea though. It looked fabulous on 9to5Chic.

I knew someone would push me on that RBL Stormy!

Lexi - oooohhh, that cardi just sounds delish! I need to go to target more often. My sister finds the best stuff there. OMG though - skinny jeans for a 2 year old?! TOO CUTE!!!!!!

Faye Lu - You're so right. For browns and beiges and taupes - it's hard to find the right shade without looking sallow. Grey in any shade is so much more flattering on any skintone.

  20. I adore your MJ bag - I think I prefer it to the Chanel Jumbo - as the squarer shape of yours suits the larger size. You chose well!

Love your grey silky tops - they are so classy and flattering with yoru skin tone. Now you've inspired me to get some ruffled grey tops!

I like the colour of your Le Creuset - I have one in the classic (and ugly!) orange - but I love the Cassis colour - have you seen it?

As for grey things I love - I really like the grey Aldo bag I picked up last winter - and the simple Club Monaco cardigan I got last week.

  21. i absolutely love all these neutral colors! xo

  22. I'm wearing Trapeze right now! :D

  23. I wish I could trade in all of my Le Creuset for Staub. I think I just prefer its utilitarian design. It's so modern and timeless at the same time.

  24. Love this post! I'm definitely into greys right now too, so perfect timing! I need to add more grey for fall/winter, I really want to pair greys with burgundy. I'm dying to get the Chanel waterproof eyeliner in Cassis, but they don't have it yet at my Nordstrom. I also want to get a shimmer grey eyeshadow, I liked Bobbi brown Rock, but the SA at Bobbi Brown said it's on the discontinued list. I do see that it's still available on her website though.

Thanks for all your wonderful posts! You've definitely sparked my interest in Chanel, Edward Bess and Paul and Joe...

  25. Sabrina, did you ever think your grey/beige post would generate so much enthusiasm? Don't you ever think your taste is boring again. Your taste is classy and classic as all these positive comments have confirmed.

  26. I am loving ALL of those looks! I am a little jealous, because with my coloring (medium brown hair with auburn/caramel highlights, med.lt. skin, hazel eyes) I tend to look rather "corpse-ish" in greys and taupes. But I love them, so somehow I make them work with my makeup colors. (the things we do for love!)

  27. oh Lina! Can I please move in and cook in your kitchen? I love this post. I think grey is my favourite colour. I love your bag too. I just love it all!

  28. I've been really diggin' grey lately too. Great post.

  29. Hey Sabrina! Love your grey picks!! I have been enjoying wearing grey eyeshadows as a wash of color over the eyelid with some smokey dark eyeliner at the lashline. My favorites right are the grey/taupe side of the MAC Earthly Riches mineralize shadow duo, Jouer Caviar, EB dusk, MAC smoke and diamonds and the greys form Chanel Enigma quad. I'm also excited about a light dove grey purse I got from Esprit with some silver stud detailing. This post comes at the perfect time, because there seems to be a lot of shades of grey this season!

  30. Ella Pretty - TY! I still would love to own a Chanel flap someday. LOL about Le Creuset - I thought I was the only one who thought orange was "ugly" but they are great to have in the kitchen. I don't think I've seen Cassis before. Sounds beautiful! Ooh, I love Club Monaco - alas there isn't one near me which is probably good for my wallet.

    Andee Layne - TY!

Catherine - LOVE Trapeze, so glad you got it.

Becca - LOL, I think Le Creuset is still very reliable. I used my Staub the other day, I wasn't really sure if there was a difference in the result but you're right, Staub looks more refined. Le Creuset almost looks more rustic.

Allison W - TY! That grey and burgandy combo does sound really nice. BB Rock is on the discountinued list? Are they talking about Rock Shimmer Wash or Rockstar Metallic? I wish she wouldn't discontinue things. I'm so happy you're discovering new brands :)

Eileen - Thank you. But yes, I am very boring, but I am fine with it :) It's what I'm confortable with. Every now and then I want to do something more wild and reckless, but of course I'm a chicken, lol.

Mamavalveta03 - TY! I love your coloring! I can see how grey might not be the best for your skintone, but I envy how you must be able to pull off greens and beiges and camel colors. It's something I can't do very easily. LOL about "make them work." Yes, we do crazy things for what we love.

Em - LOL, I have a tiny kitchen and no dishwasher. I am insanely messy in the kitchen. Always looks like a tornado hit after I am done cooking. It gets cleaned up, but still gets VERY messy. Still want to move in?

    Lisa - TY!

Lakshmi - Great grey picks. I love EB Dusk and how it looks grey, green, taupe all at the same time.

  31. Love your blog! I had a question about the j crew Pippy top. I did an online chat with j crew's customer service for measurements and she told me the chest on a sz 0 is 39". I'm 33"-34". Do you think the top would be too loose on me. I know it's meant to fit a little loose, but I'm not sure if 39" is TOO loose. Thanks in advance!
