Chanel Taupe Grisé 87 Soft Touch Eyeshadow

*Updated - see below at bottom*

Taupe + Shimmer + Chanel = must buy. If there's a taupe Chanel makes, it's instantly a must have for me. I am taupe-obsessed much like Elvira and Josie, and there's no stopping us, ever. Taupe Grisé 87 is the newest taupe released by Chanel for their Fall 2010 collection. My makeup-twin Amy at Café Makeup has given a lovely review here (I call her my twin because we love the same things, although she has fairer skintone = Chanel Cameo/NC15 while I am Chanel Shell/NC30-35).

There a number of other great reviews, photos and swatches out there so the focus of this post will be on comparisons to similar shades.

There are a million other taupes out there (click on the Taupe Label below this post to see the other ones I have obsessed over) but I picked out the ones in my mind I thought, "Could this one be a dupe?" I personally could not find a dupe for this lovely color. There are similar shades, but from what I have, no dupe.

Compared to: Chanel Silvery, Chanel Safari, Chanel Vega (d/c), MAC Moth Brown (l/e), MAC Sweet Sienna (l/e), MAC Smoke & Diamonds (l/e), MAC Clue (l/e), Stila Dapple (d/c), Chanetcaille Meteorite, Laura Mercier Sable

Is it a must-have? For me it was being a Chanel fan and a taupe fan. I have no willpower when it comes to Chanel. I played around with it on the eyes today, it works better when applied over a cream base, otherwise it just ended up looking bruisey on my eyes. I would describe it as having a subtle sheen. It looks shimmery in the container but when applied on the eyes, it looks more satin-matte rather than shimmery.

*Update* Upon reviewing my swatches and those on other websites, I thought Taupe Grise looked extremely brown on me compared to other girls. Much more brown than it appears in the container. I swatched it again alone, and then next to MAC Moth Brown to see if perhaps I made a mistake - but no. For some reason, it looks cool in the container, but on my skin, it's not quite as cool. Here is another swatch comparison. Note that I have olive medium skin. This may look different on you. It's still a cool colored taupe in my opinion, but next to Moth Brown it just looks warm perhaps because Moth Brown is overwhelmingly cool with an almost blueish sheen.

Hope this helps give you a better idea!

  6. The ever so lovely SA at the local Nordstroms is going to call me as soon as it arrives. I had a chance to see it yesterday, although I couldn't test it at the time as the SA hadn't set up the tester display yet. I must say that it is incredibly beautiful--so much more so than any picture has shown--and it defies description. It's cool, but has a warm depth. It's luminous and shimmery, but it's satiny and matte. The name Taupe Grise does not even begin to capture the beauty of this intriguing shade.

  11. Hi Lina, Taupe Grise on me went very gray and indeed I thought it was an exact dupe for Moth Brown - I tried 'em side by side, too, and they're close, with Taupe Grise being a shade or two darker, and it doesn't have that magical plum iridescence that Moth Brown has. But I love TG just the same! (I have neutral-cool pale skin, as opposed to your olive skin, so maybe that's the difference.)

  12. I almost didn't buy this yesterday but I'm really glad I did. I tend toward lighter neutral colors and more browns, but this really changes color depending on the light. Thanks for the helpful review!

  15. I bought this yesterday and I wearing it today. I really tried to find a dupe for this one but unfortunantely I was unsuccessful. In my opinion it is a must buy, it is beautiful color. It is perfect for a smokey day look. I paired it with haux and a pink blush. Lis

  16. This looks very versatile . . . how do you think it compares to Edward Bess's eyeshadow "Mystery?"
(I own that shadow and don't want to waste my $$$!)

  17. today i have almost bought it but at the end i didn't because it was not the color that i expected. on me (very fairy skin) it looks like a plum-purple. SO plummy, that i compared it with the purple in the new chanel palette, enigma (color right-down) and they looked the same. :-( still looking for the perfect taupe

  18. I finally took the plunge at got this and I'm in love <3 Also got Safari, they make the most perfect everyday eye, but it's also possible to make very pretty smoky evening look with them.

  19. I really like the Chanel taupe gris better than the Mac! Another great brand for single eyeshadows is Shu Uemura. The staying power of those things are great and so many colors! I dont have a taupe but I have a SU eyeshadow in Medium Brown that's beautiful.
