Can Beauty Rituals Banish the Winter Blues? What Else Brightens Your Mood?

Since I live in Southern California where it rains maybe 5 times per year, it may seem illogical that anyone living here can experience the winter blues. Yes, we get sun most of the year - but I attribute my bluesy mood to the fact that the DH and I have spent most of our free time cooped up in my house the past 4 months because of projects and homework. One of our New Year's Resolutions is to get out of the house more often, go biking, walk more, stress less, worry less and focus more on the bright side of life.

Do you have any beauty rituals you do on a regular or occasional basis to brighten your mood? I have been to the spa at Four Seasons about 3 times now and have ventured to a couple other resorts with the girl-friends and while I totally agree it's a luxurious, uplifting, and renewing experience, I think there are better and cheaper ways to banish the winter blues. Although I won't complain if my DH gets me another gift certificate! For something beauty related I find getting a pedicure or putting on a face mask is always fun and usually make me feel better.

Any other activities you have to brighten your mood? (For the sake of this blog, please keep it G rated, lol.) For me:
  • Baking - comforting smells & warmth from the oven keep my mind focused on the task at hand rather than worrying about other things
  • Going to the petstore - I love my Jack Russells & cat but, am the biggest sucker for other baby animals
  • Comedy TV - I love The Office, 30Rock, Community
  • Drama TV - I'm also addicted to Fringe, Bones, The Closer, NCIS and Warehouse13 (yes, cheesy I know, but still fun)
  • And of course shopping, depending on what mood I'm in, I love shopping with friends, but sometimes I like going alone since my schedule is different from most of my friends these days

  1. You forgot reading beauty blogs! Fab and inspiring. Also visitng farmers' markets and finding recipes to cook the seasonal, local (we hope!) purchases. Visiting the local library for books, games, DVDs.

    hugs and playtime with my daughter (i love watching her apply her play lipstick, i swear i did not teach her to do that!)
    alone time getting mani/pedis or impromtu lunch dates with my girlfriends

  3. I love baking during winter too. My girlfriends come over and we have a couple of cocktails and bake cupcakes. We try to see who can design the best ones.

    Also, for some reason I always get my hair dyed and darker color so I have that snow white look. I don't know why, it makes me happy.

    Shopping always helps when your feeling the blues, but I don't like to over do it. For some reason I always watch that movie Somethings Gotta Give, I love watching that movie on my couch under a blanket.

  4. Sauna is great to relax, and friends too. friends with sauna is also a good combination.

    I do not have special beauty treatments to mood me up.

    Makes my house smell lovely and who doesn't love eating warm, fresh-out-of-the-oven cookies and goodies?! :D

    I also love going to the hair salon and SPA! Both are very relaxing and just makes you feel great after :) xx

  6. For me, putting on my makeup in the morning is a great mood-lifter and helps me feel like I'm ready to take on the day. When I'm feeling particularly down or stressed, taking a bath, or re-doing my nails can be a quick easy way to destress. I also do love shopping too, but I think the guilt from overspending actually causes more stress later on, so I'm trying to avoid that.

    Other than that, I do love baking too, but I think I love cooking more, especially with SO. I do really hope we get to do that more often. I think writing - both blogging and writing letters to penpals - also really helps me destress by distracting me from whatever's bothering me. I love reading too. I'm trying to do that more often now.

    Unfortunately, I'm very bad at watching TV. I get addicted and then end up watching an entire season in a day or two and only end up more stressed out because of all the things I put off doing and usually also end up with a massive headache LOL... so for now I just avoid it as much as possible. =)

  7. It is so cold here [last night we had -32C ]and offices, roads, trains etc are closed. I'm "celebrating" by staying in and;

    *re-organising my makeup
    *watching DVDs of good old films such as; "girls just want to have fun", "flashdance", "sixteen candles"...
    *...and not missing anything from MTV drama "Jersey Shore" :)
    *trying to remember to use body lotion and hand cream (very dry skin as a result of the cold)

    and last but not least;
    *boxing up clothes for charity (if it's cold here, just imagine what it's like in countries where homes lack heating etc)

  9. Great ideas!

    For me, nothing beats the old stand-by of going out and getting the longest, most luxurious pedi I can afford. Sometimes that means an afternoon at the cushy local spa, sometimes that means the "deluxe spa pedi" at the strip mall! The warm swirling water, yummy smells, and the foot rub perk me right up, not to mention leaving with sparkly perfect toes. :)

    Making sure to go out and see my girlfriends is also important for me in maintaining a good mood through the dark winter months. Now that we have husbands, kids, and demanding jobs, it is harder and harder to get together. I still miss the days of going out every weekend, drinking cocktails on a patio, but a few mimosas and some good laughs really help to shake off the winter funk.

Playing with my dogs, visiting the pet store and oh-ing and ah-ing over the pups and kittens, baking chocolate chip cookies, curling up with a good book and a cup of tea in front of the fire, exercising. It doesn't take much to boost my spirits as I'm pretty much a happy camper most of the time.

  11. I love baking as well. So many of my work projects take a long time to complete, so it's nice to have a product that everyone enjoys in a single afternoon.

  13. Nothing brightens my mood more than a plate of good food and a movie. That can either mean that I'm home with takeout watching my Netflix on my Macbook or I'm at the theater with a bag of popcorn and a Cherry Coke. If neither is an option, then I go for a loooong walk around my neighborhood, which is awesome because my neighborhood is beautiful!

    I don't shop for fun, because that stresses me out, believe it or not! I only shop when I know I want or need something. I make lists and whatnot so that I don't buy things I don't need. And mani/pedis don't relax me either! I get them because I need to, not because I like to.
